50 Cent Fares first birthday!

The Miles Government’s 50 Cent Fares initiative has just celebrated its first birthday!

Since Labor brought in the 50 Cent Fare trial a year ago Queenslanders have saved over $300 million.

While there has been a 16% increase in public transport usage in South-East Queensland since the start of the year, regional centres have seen even greater patronage increases. TransLink reports regional bus trips in Cairns have increased 41%; in the Whitsundays 42%; in Townsville 91%; and in Mackay a whopping 161%.

It is clear that the trial was a success and the decision by the Miles Government to continue 50 cent fares was the right one.

The only concern is the decision by the Crisafulli Government to only extend funding for 50 cent fares until the end of this term. This is a terrific initiative and should be made permanent – not just permanent until the end of this term.
